For the design of ZIBA, Francis Kéré took cues from traditional West African stools, which are usually shaped by carving solid shea logs with hand-made tools. The ZIBA stool reinterprets this process using an advanced technology that machine carves a scented cedar log. It is made from completely natural wood and hand-finished without the addition of any treatment. Its playful and soft shape evokes a simple elegance and is compatible with a multitude of surroundings. The stool’s name refers to an ironic Burkinabè expression to encourage avoiding indolence.

The ZIBA stool was designed for the installation Courtyard Village in Palazzo Litta during the 2016 Fuorisalone in Milan. It was also an integral part of the 2017 Serpentine Pavilion designed by Kéré. The stools complemented the pavilion’s structure, allowing people to sit down and enjoy the shade.

The piece is produced by Riva1920, an Italian brand specialising in solid wood furniture. It is currently for sale on their website.
