This sculpture was designed for the 2018 Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards for Global Tobacco Control. It was awarded to the Ministry of Health Vietnam, the Fondo Solidario para la Salud (FOSALUD) de El Salvador, the Fundación Interamericana del Corazón México, the Ministry of Health Senegal, the Uganda National Health Consumers’ Organisation, and the Argentinian Ministries of Health and Treasury supported by the Inter-American Heart Foundation (FIC). The non-governmental and governmental institutions were honoured on the 7th of March 2018 at the 17th World Conference on Tobacco or Health in Cape Town, South Africa, for implementing anti-tobacco policies in their countries.

Inspired by their outstanding work, Francis Kéré designed a trophy that intertwines wood and brass. While one material is re-growing, the other one is fully recyclable. Two mill-cut oval holes give the log its characteristics and emphasise its organic shape. The mechanical subtraction of the wood reinterprets traditional West African carving techniques used to produce furniture. Complementing the natural appearance of the wood, the reflecting brass surrounds the log like a medal honouring the recipients’ engagement. The award represents Kéré’s commitment to socially responsible design that focuses on participation, innovative use of material and sustainability.
