Kéré Architecture Unveils Design for New Healthcare Center in Bubanza, Burundi
Kéré Architecture has been commissioned to design a new Healthcare Center in Bubanza, Burundi, 40 kilometers north of Bujumbura. The Ineza Clinic will offer improved access to maternity and surgical care for the rural population. Set on a steep hillside, the design organizes ten pavilions along a spine road, following the natural contours to minimize excavation and maximize natural ventilation.
The birthing and outpatient units feature shaded waiting areas and ventilated roofs, while the surgical ward combines daylight, views, and stack ventilation to support patient comfort. Local materials and craftsmanship are central to the project.
Clay bricks and stone are sourced nearby, and the Kéré team is training local workers, combining sustainable construction with skills transfer. The Ineza Clinic aims to deliver dignified healthcare while strengthening the local economy.
