Goethe-Institut Opens New Building by Kéré Architecture in Dakar
The Goethe-Institut has officially opened its new building in Dakar, designed by Francis Kéré. Built from locally produced compressed earth blocks, the project combines regional building traditions with contemporary architecture to create a welcoming space for cultural exchange, learning and dialogue.
Responding to Dakar's climate through shaded courtyards, natural ventilation and the use of local materials, the building reflects Kéré Architecture's commitment to designing with place, climate and community in mind.
The opening was celebrated with a multi-day cultural programme featuring conversations with Francis Kéré, performances, exhibitions and the premiere of the documentary The Red and the Grey Matter, which follows the making of the project.
The new Goethe-Institut will serve as a vibrant platform for cultural collaboration between Senegal, Germany and the international community.
